# Google AI Overview: find competitors and market gaps

Google AI Overview is the AI answer inside Google Search. It is a **free AI tool** anyone can use, and a fast way to find a market gap in the Positioning stage. This used to take a lot of manual searching. Now AI searches and suggests for you.

## Find a market gap

1. **Turn on AI search**

On Google, switch to [AI Mode](https://www.google.com/search?udm=50). It answers with one summary and cited sources, not a list of links, so you quickly see who is doing what in the market.
2. **Type your wishes and concepts**

Type in the wishes, concepts, and questions you have about your product. See whether **anyone is already working on** that idea. If so, the result names the competitors doing it.
3. **Open the brand citations**

The result often names competitors working on the same idea. Click the brand citations to see who your **real competitors** are. Each citation leads to a website you can study, so you end this step with a short list of rivals and the gaps none of them fill.

## Learn from competitors

When you start out, **competitors are your teachers**. They are ahead, they already have results, and they have had time to tune their websites. Watching what they put out and learning how they tune it is the best way to learn.

The most important thing to learn is **how they make money**, meaning their sales model, not the product they sell. Examples of models are sponsorship, ads, yearly fees or memberships. If a competitor sells a membership plan, many customers are ready to pay every year. Compare that sales method with yours, estimate the cost, and see whether you can do something similar.

## When you find no competitors

No competitors means your niche is in one of 3 cases:

1. No one has had time to build in it.
2. The niche has no demand, so no one builds in it.
3. You are the first to enter this niche.

You need to find out which case you are in, for example by checking demand with [Google Trends](https://cuongthach.com/docs/write-to-sell/resources/tools/google-trends).
