The Idea - Write - Edit publishing process

Idea - Write - Edit is a three-step process to publish a post: lock the outline, write in one go, then only cut, each step with its own stop.

Idea - Write - Edit is a three-step process for publishing one piece of content: lock the outline first, write in one go from the outline, then edit by cutting. Each step ends at a stopping point, and the next step starts only when you hold what the step before made.

The three steps and what you hold after each

  • Idea: a locked outline. You are the screenwriter. The outline is the script of the post: one core message and six to ten big ideas with short titles.
  • Write: a rough draft. You are the actor. You say or write out everything you understand about each idea, with no fixing and no looking things up. This is the longest version.
  • Edit: a finished post. You are the editor. You tighten the opening first, then cut the draft and switch to your customers’ words. The opening is not in the outline: you can only write it once the draft is full.

The process works behind the Know - Trust - Love content funnel. The funnel tells you which posts to write and in what order, and Idea - Write - Edit is how you get each post out. Without this step of doing the work, your funnel plan and your ideas stay forever in your notes, in Notion or Obsidian. The process ends with the post on your website, where readers understand you and come to like you.

Every type of post in the funnel, a Know post, a Trust post or a Love post, goes through the same three steps. Only the shape of the outline changes, because each type of post has its own goal; writing and editing stay the same.

The outline is the script of the post

The outline decides whether the post holds together, so the Idea step takes the most time and deserves the most care. Read a good outline, and both a person skimming the post and an AI scanning it see right away the message, the main point of the whole post, and whether the ideas connect.

Your post differs from other people’s posts in two layers, and both are decided in the Idea step:

  • The idea layer. The post’s idea is one nobody has said yet; you are the first to say it, so the post is one of a kind.
  • The telling layer. Where an idea overlaps with someone else’s, you make it different with your own stories, experience and way of saying things.

Words come after these two layers. A script that is wrong from the start, crams in many messages, or has small ideas that do not connect cannot be saved by the Write and Edit steps. This is also the step AI does worst: a script of your own is not a mix of ready-made content patterns.

Why the outline must be locked first

Words always carry a fixed meaning. When you change the title of an idea, its meaning changes with it, while the part below is still written for the old title, so the post goes off key. You often think you are only changing a few words, but the idea has changed. Locking the outline first and not touching it again keeps the whole post on one message.

Going in the wrong order is the way into the writing loop. You write first, edit, and only then ask whether the post serves the message; you redo the outline, write in the missing ideas, change the titles to match, then have to fix the ideas above again.

Changing the outline in a later step sends the post back to the startChange titlesOutline not lockedWriteEditPublish

Each loop like this adds the whole publishing time again: three loops take three times as long. A post done in the right order is usually done once. A later edit only updates what has really changed, not a stack of rewrites to test which one is better, the way you would test a sales page.

Each step has a stopping point

A stopping point is the moment a step is done and what it made is put away. Thanks to stopping points, you always know where you are and what comes next:

Step Stopping point
Idea You read the outline again and find the script good and flowing
Write You go through every idea in one go; an idea where you freeze is one you do not understand well enough
Edit You and your customers both understand it, and the post is tight and goes straight to the point
  • An interruption does not lose the post. A call in the middle only leaves one step half done; it does not make you lose the direction of the whole post.
  • You do not need to wait for the mood. Once you have an outline, you follow it and write, whether you feel happy or low.
  • It fits short free time. Each step fits a slot of 30 minutes to 2 hours.
  • You see at once where you stumble. If the outline takes four or five days while writing and editing stay quick, the Idea step is the one to practice.

The process rests on you, not on tools

All three steps rest almost fully on you. AI only gathers, converts and tightens what you have already given it. The deciding parts need a person: picking ideas for an outline other people want to read, and feeling for the reader so you can write the opening.

Most of a post’s result, about 80%, lies in the Idea step, and the Idea step rests on your sense as a reader, not on a gift for fine writing. People who read books, read the news or watch videos every day already have that sense: they look at an outline and see whether it flows or falls apart. Fancy writing, metaphors and slang do the opposite and make both readers and search engines slower to understand.

So the way to get faster is to repeat the three steps until they become habit, not to buy more tools. The skill you train is the skill of publishing, and you can use it again for every kind of content: posts, YouTube videos, TikTok.

Boundaries

Idea - Write - Edit is Idea - Write - Edit is not
A process to publish a post A formula for getting orders; sales are the funnel’s job
One shared frame for every type of post A template that makes every post look the same
A way of working that rests almost fully on you A way to hand your posts to AI; AI only helps
Something you get better at by doing it again Something that gets faster when you buy better tools
A publishing skill, built on your sense as a reader A gift for fine writing
One pass for each post Many versions to test which one is better
